The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports more than 22% of Indiana’s adults have mental illness and more than 27% of young adults have mental illness but only 17% received mental health services in the past year, according to a release.
“The ability to provide mental health services has not been able to keep up with the increased demand nationwide, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which left millions of patients of all ages untreated or underserved,” the release said.
A study published in Oct. 2023 in the Journal of American Medicine Network on the economic burden associated with untreated mental illness in Indiana found it was associated with $4.2 billion in annual societal costs.
